Today on Thrusday 14th August 2008 at around 10.30 pm, I am busy with my work. Just then I got a mail from someone. When I started the Outlook to view it, I saw there was another mail from the organization wishing everybody a Happy Independence day.

We all know that India got its independence from British Empire on 15th August 1947. The whole of India celeberates this day with lots of joy and pride. But we always forget the day before this. At the strike of the mid-night hour on 14th – 15th August 1947, two new independent nations were born – India and Pakistan. We always forget 14th August 1947. This was the day when it was finally decided that India will be divided and brothers will be parting ways.

We forget the agony of the people living on both sides of the boundary who were innocent and were unaware about their fate in the newly born countries. The migration that happened due to the partition was one of the largest human migration ever in the recorded history of the mankind. There were dead bodies all around, women raped, children killed, elderly people beheaded! There is a cost attached to the independence we have today. Both the parties suffered in terms of the human loss as well as loss of public properties.

We should not forget the price we paid for this. We should pay our homage to the departed souls who suffered to a great extent. We should look towards 14th August as the day when so many people sacrificed a lot more than ever required. We shall never forget this date.
