This post is in continuation to the previous post – Does Alexa Ranking impact your advertising decisions?

A series of experiments with my blog’s Alexa ranking proved even further that we cannot rely on the it for advertising decisions. My rank when I started looking at Alexa 20 days back was – 21,863,014 and today it stands at – 4,319,081. I hope if these experiments continue for another couple of days, my blog may rank within 100,000. But the fact remains the same, the traffic I generated to be accounted by Alexa is a false traffic. Though I have a good amount of people visiting my blog each month, anyone can fool around and convince webmasters to advertise on their websites.

So here is the worst ever comprehensive guide on how to improve your Alexa ranking -

- The first thing I did was to advocate the use of Alexa toolbar among my friends. Now I can make Alexa account the traffic it was missing earlier.

- Put a Alexa widget showing your Alexa ranking. This makes your visitors curious about it and then click on the widget only to reach the Alexa’s website. Since the landing page of Alexa recognizes that it came from my blog, it records the visit of the curious friend as a visit on my blog too.

- Put a Alexa widget on your blog that asks your visitors to write reviews about your website on Alexa. Though non of my visitors did yet, but I think this may work too.

- You must also install Alexa toolbar on your machine and set your website as the homepage. So whenever you open the browser even for other purposes, Alexa will record a visit on your website.

- Now comes that bad part. You can use some traffic exchange and auto-surfer (e.g. www.upmyrank.com) to bring in false traffic to your website with a Alexa toolbar installed in your compatible browser. This is definitely unethical to do, but forgive me as I did only to experiment things.

All above methods will surely improve your Alexa ranking but it is just a false portrayal of your web traffic and ranking. So personally if I want to put a banner add or something like that on a website with high traffic, I will not judge it by Alexa ranking.

So anyone reading this post can think again and again before the trust the Alexa ranking and let it now not impact their advertising decisions.
