heartYou exercise, you want to keep fit. But how do you exercise matters. There should be a target heart rate while you exercise to burn fat/ calories. Does that help? How to determine your target heart rate?

Keeping your heart rate within the correct range is very important to kick off your metabolism to the next level. This will help you to burn more fat/ calories with the same routine as you do now. There are two kinds of exercises, aerobic and anaerobic. In aerobic exercises you burn fat as a fuel and in anaerobic exercises you burn sugar as a fuel. In both cases you need the heart rate to be in a perfect range for maximum impact.

For a normal human adult, the heart rate is within 70 – 90 beats per minute at rest. For super athletes it could be as lower as to 40 – 50 beats per minute. For overweight and smokers, it could be higher than the normal. But what would be the correct range of target heart rate? Now there is a simple formula for this –

Target heart rate range = 60 %( 220 – age) to 80 %( 220-age)

So for an adult who is 25 years of age, the target heart rate would be in the range of 117 – 156 beats per minute. As you grow older, the maximum target heart rate keeps decreasing.

It’s best to tailor your exercise heart rate to how you feel while exercising. If you’re a smoker or if you have hypertension or heart disease, talk to your doctor or a certified trainer about a target heart rate that’s right for you.
